Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has officially ruled out vying for the presidency in the 2027 general elections, instead pledging to back a yet-to-be-named candidate.
Speaking at a public gathering in Nyanza, Raila disclosed that senior opposition figures had approached him with a deal—run against President William Ruto in 2027, then support one of them for the 2032 race. He turned it down, insisting he has no intention of disrupting Ruto’s administration, especially as they are currently collaborating on regional development projects.
Raila’s move marks a significant shift from his combative political style to a more reconciliatory, statesmanlike role. While he kept his preferred successor under wraps, his comments hinted at looming political realignments that could redefine Kenya’s opposition landscape ahead of 2027.
By stepping aside, Raila positions himself as a kingmaker whose endorsement could dramatically sway the race. Political analysts say his decision will force the opposition to rethink strategy and may lead to the formation of new alliances.
Despite not running, Raila remains a towering figure in Kenyan politics, and his eventual choice of candidate is expected to carry enormous influence among opposition supporters and swing voters alike.
