The petroleum industry in Kenya is largely dominated by multinational corporations and a few extremely wealthy individuals. Among the few local entrepreneurs who have made a significant mark in the sector is Thayu Kamau Kabugi, a billionaire from Murang’a County, who founded the successful Astrol Petroleum Company Limited.
Thayu Kamau Kabugi (E.B.S.), the founder of Astrol Petroleum, was the company’s chairman until his passing on February 20, 2019, at the age of 94. He was born in Muringu village, Murang’a County, into a modest family with three siblings.
Despite being a close associate of Kenya’s founding father, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, and having the opportunity to benefit from political connections, Mr. Thayu chose to build his wealth through hard work and determination. His success did not make him forget his roots. Many residents of Murang’a can attest to his contributions to local development and philanthropy. In recognition of his selflessness and community work, he was awarded the Elder of the Burning Spear (EBS) by President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2017.
Background
Astrol Petroleum Limited was founded by the late Thayu Kamau Kabugi in 2000. The company specializes in the supply and distribution of petroleum products across Kenya through a network of petrol stations known as Astrol Petrol Stations. Its client base spans motorists, power stations, agribusiness, and industrial manufacturers nationwide.
Now in its 22nd year of operation, Astrol Petroleum serves over 1,000 clients, upholding core values such as integrity, trust, respect, and servant leadership. The company aims to be a leading petroleum provider not just in Kenya, but across Africa, known for its high-quality products and innovative services.
Leadership, Branches, and Services
Astrol Petroleum operates in Kenya, with ten filling stations strategically located in places such as Runda, Northern Bypass, Thika Road, Lenana Road, Mombasa Road, Rironi, Murang’a, Athi River, Ruiru, and Utawala. The company has created job opportunities for over 300 individuals, who work in its offices or at the filling stations.
The services provided by Astrol Petroleum include fuel, lubricants, car service bays, tire centers, car washes, and convenience stores.
Leadership of the company has now passed to Thayu Kamau’s son, James Mwangi, who serves as the group’s Managing Director (MD). In an interview, James Mwangi shared that he developed his leadership skills under the mentorship of his late father.
“I’ve had a passion for business from a young age. My late dad was deeply involved in the oil industry, and I started helping him with his work before going to university to study International Business Administration. I continued supporting his work while studying, and after graduation, I chose to continue his legacy rather than pursue another job. The trust my father placed in me has been invaluable. We were a great team, and his emphasis on hard work and integrity has stayed with me ever since,” James Mwangi said.
Through his leadership and commitment to the company’s core values, James continues to steer Astrol Petroleum toward new heights, ensuring that the company remains a significant player in Kenya’s petroleum industry.
