Taliban arrest 14 people in northern Afghanistan for playing music and singing

Local authorities in northern Afghanistan have reportedly detained 14 individuals for participating in a private gathering involving music and singing, according to a statement released by the provincial police on Saturday.

The incident took place in Takhar province, where police allege that the individuals gathered at a residential home late Thursday night. The group was said to be engaging in activities that included playing musical instruments and singing, which, according to officials, disrupted the neighborhood.

Since 2021, the current administration in Afghanistan has implemented a series of social regulations aimed at aligning public life with its interpretation of Islamic values. Among these regulations are limitations on public music performances and broadcasts, including restrictions at events, in vehicles, and on radio or television.

In past statements, officials have expressed concerns that certain forms of music may lead to moral distractions or cause public disturbances. Some music schools have closed down, and reports indicate that musical instruments have been confiscated in different parts of the country.

While music remains restricted in formal settings, there are reports that some private gatherings continue discreetly. Additionally, some former musicians have been encouraged to explore alternative forms of expression such as traditional poetry and vocal chants.

The individuals detained in the recent Takhar province incident remain under investigation.
