Joyce Wanjiku, popularly known for her role as Kellen in the once-popular Citizen TV show Tahidi High, has opened up about the personal challenges she’s faced since her days on television.
Speaking in a recent interview, Wanjiku reflected on the difficulties of raising her children alone after parting ways with her husband. Although she didn’t delve deep into the reasons for their separation, she noted that the journey has not been easy, especially as a single parent.
Wanjiku shared that during her time on Tahidi High, she encountered financial struggles, which worsened after her acting role ended. In March 2021, she reached out to the public, appealing for assistance to help cover school fees for her two children — one preparing for the KCSE exams and another about to join Form Three.
“Kenyans really came through for me. Despite the tough economic times brought on by the pandemic, some well-wishers managed to support me, and I’m grateful,” she said.
She mentioned that her daughters are still in need of financial support, as one is preparing to transition to tertiary education while the other continues with secondary school. Joyce, who is also a person living with a disability, highlighted the additional challenges she faces with mobility, noting the need for a new orthopedic aid to improve her movement.
To sustain herself and her family, Wanjiku ventured into the food business by opening an eatery in a Nairobi estate. The venture, she says, has faced its fair share of challenges and is yet to become profitable.
“Some friends and a local leader helped me start the business, but it still needs support and renovations. Many people assume that being on TV means you’re well off, but that’s not always the case,” she explained.
Wanjiku urged the public to be more understanding and supportive, reminding Kenyans that public figures also face silent struggles away from the limelight.
