The Umiru Market in Yala, Siaya County, is currently in a state of mourning after the tragic discovery of one of its residents who was found dead, suspected to have taken her own life through hanging.
According to the official police report, the lifeless body of 27-year-old Vera Amondi Okoth was discovered hanging in the bathroom, a rope tightly wound around her neck.
It is reported that prior to this devastating incident, the young woman had expressed frustration, claiming that despite submitting 500 job applications, she had not received any responses.
The police narrative reveals that Vera’s mother went to wake her daughter in the morning, only to find her room empty. A subsequent search led to the heart-wrenching discovery of Vera’s lifeless body in the bathroom.
“The report from the Yala police indicates that Vera Amondi Okoth’s mother attempted to wake her daughter but realized she was not in her room. Upon checking the bathroom, she made the shocking discovery of her daughter’s hanging body,” as stated in the report obtained by Taifa Leo.
Upon examination by the Yala police, no visible injuries were found on Vera’s body.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, it was revealed that the young woman had expressed concerns to her mother about the difficulty of securing a job, despite having submitted numerous applications. Further investigation uncovered that she held a Bachelor of Science degree, awarded in 2019 from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST).
While no suicide note was discovered explaining the motive behind her actions, her academic certificates were found on her bed.
The body has been transported to the Siaya mortuary, where it awaits autopsy to determine the official cause of death. The community remains in shock and sorrow as they come to terms with this unfortunate loss.
