Safaricom slashesData Bundle prizes after pressure from Airtel

safAirtel’s new package ‘UnlimiNET’ has been trending on Twitter for the whole week, perhaps proof of just how popular it is. Kenya’s second largest mobile service provider came up with the package to counter Safaricom’s dominance. It is modelled like Safaricom’s postpaid bundles, but a lot cheaper. tel The honeymoon period for Airtel may very well be over, as Safaricom has this morning silently slashed the prices of its data bundles too.
The announcement has not been made officially, but from what we can gather, the new rates are as follows. DAILY BUNDLES OFF-PEAK (10pm-6am) SMS Price 5MB 5MB 5SMS 5 12MB 12MB 12SMS 10 25MB 25MB 25SMS 20 100MB 100MB 100SMS 30 WEEKLY BUNDLES Price 5MB 5 10MB 10 20MB 20 50MB 40 100MB 75 MONTHLY BUNDLES OFF-PEAK (10pm-6am) Price 300MB 300MB 250 500MB 500MB 400 1GB 1GB 750 5GB 5GB 2000 10GB 10GB 3000 25GB 25GB 5750 50GB 50GB 6750 Night Bundle (10PM – 6AM) 1GB 300 The latest move by Safaricom has also tactically killed the ‘Bundles Mwitu’ business. While the 50 GB at Sh6750 would be Godsent for the bundles resellers, Safaricom has ensured it’s a step ahead by reducing significantly the amount you can Sambaza per day. We understand you can now only send 20MBs per day. To the competition, Airtel still has the edge because its UnlimiNET package includes minutes, plus you still access the internet after your bundles are over, but this will be an interesting battle. Your move Orange.
