A tragic road accident in Machakos County has left dozens of families in shock after a school bus carrying pupils and teachers veered off the road and plunged into Mutwamwaki River in Musingini location, Kangonde, Masinga sub-county.
The bus, which belonged to Bishop Ndingi School, was transporting pupils from St Augustine Mumbuni Primary School when it reportedly developed brake failure along the Kivandini-Masinga road.
The vehicle lost control at the Mutwamwaki bridge before overturning and landing on its side in the river.
Rescue operations were quickly mounted by residents and passersby who rushed to the scene to pull out trapped pupils and teachers.
Emergency responders later arrived and evacuated the injured to Matuu Level Four Hospital in Yatta subcounty.
According to hospital officials, forty-eight pupils, three teachers and the driver sustained various injuries and were admitted for treatment.
Images from the crash site showed the bus with shattered windows, a broken windscreen and twisted seats scattered across the interior.
Police officers later sealed off the area to manage the crowd that had gathered as worried parents and locals streamed in.
