President William Ruto has claimed that Siaya Governor James Orengo and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka played a significant role in Raila Odinga’s failure to clinch the presidency. Speaking during a public address, President Ruto argued that divisions and strategic missteps within Raila’s political camp ultimately weakened his bid, despite his long-standing influence and support across the country.
According to Ruto, internal disagreements and lack of unified leadership among Raila’s close allies undermined the opposition’s campaign at critical moments. He singled out Orengo and Kalonzo, suggesting that their political decisions and positioning failed to fully rally support behind Raila’s candidature. The president implied that personal interests and competing ambitions within the opposition coalition created cracks that were exploited during the election period.
Ruto further stated that successful political movements require loyalty, discipline, and a shared vision, arguing that these elements were missing in Raila’s camp. He contrasted this with his own political alliance, which he described as cohesive and focused, allowing it to mobilize supporters effectively across different regions. The remarks appeared aimed at reinforcing his narrative that unity and strategic planning were key factors behind his electoral victory.
The president’s comments have sparked debate, with allies of Raila dismissing the claims as an attempt to rewrite history and shift blame. They argue that Raila’s loss was influenced by multiple factors, including electoral dynamics and broader political challenges, rather than the actions of individual leaders. Political analysts note that the statements reflect ongoing tensions within Kenya’s opposition and highlight the struggle to define responsibility following the last general election.
As political realignments continue ahead of future contests, Ruto’s remarks are expected to fuel further discussion about leadership, loyalty, and coalition politics in Kenya’s evolving political landscape.
