Kenyan Olympic Marathon champions Eliud Kipchoge and Peres Jepchirchir will lead an impressive team of 11 athletes, consisting of five men and six women, at the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics Marathon.
Kipchoge, a double Olympic gold medalist in the marathon, aims to etch his name further into history by defending his title in Paris, a feat that would make him the oldest athlete to do so at 39. Despite a setback at the Tokyo Marathon earlier this year, where he finished 10th, Kipchoge has dedicated himself to rigorous training in preparation for the upcoming challenge.
The Kenyan squad boasts a lineup of exceptional talent, with Kipchoge accompanied by the likes of Benson Kipruto, the recent victor of the Tokyo Marathon, and Timothy Kiplagat, who secured the Abu Dhabi Marathon title in 2022. Notable additions include Vincent Ngetich, who made waves by challenging Kipchoge at the 2023 Berlin Marathon, and Alexander Mutiso, a silver medalist at the 2018 World Under-18 Athletics Championships.
In the women’s category, Peres Jepchirchir spearheads the formidable team, eager to defend her Olympic marathon crown and secure a second consecutive gold. She is joined by Hellen Obiri, reigning champion of both the New York City and Boston Marathons, and Brigid Kosgei, the former world marathon record holder who clinched second place at the postponed 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
The squad is further bolstered by the inclusion of Sharon Lokedi, victor of the 2022 New York City Marathon, and Ruth Chepng’etich, a two-time Chicago Marathon champion seeking her maiden Olympic title. With such a wealth of talent and determination, Team Kenya is poised to shine on the Olympic stage, representing their nation with distinction and prowess.
