Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has openly criticized Cooperatives and MSMEs Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya for bringing his spouses into the spotlight during a recent homecoming event. Kahiga expressed concern that Oparanya’s actions were disconnected from the expectations of younger generations, particularly Gen Z. He urged Oparanya and the other 18 Cabinet secretaries to focus on their duties and support President William Ruto in delivering on his promises to the Kenyan people.
Kahiga’s comments followed reports that CS Oparanya had introduced his family members at his new office after his appointment. Kahiga stressed that Cabinet secretaries should prioritize their professional responsibilities over personal displays. “I observed that instead of focusing on his work, one of them was preoccupied with introducing his wives. Gen Z has clearly indicated their disapproval of such displays of affluence,” Kahiga remarked.
Additionally, Kahiga reminded the Cabinet secretaries that their appointments came in the wake of historic Gen Z-led protests that resulted in significant loss of life. “As they celebrate and hold homecoming events, they should remember that these celebrations come on the heels of the tragic deaths of fifty Kenyans. We expect decency and modesty. They should focus on their work rather than engaging in homecomings. Their priority should be to assist the president,” he added.
In response, Oparanya has vowed to resign if his proposed ideas are not implemented, asserting that President Ruto selected him for his expertise.
