Famous sports journalist Stephen Mukangai has shared his inspiring journey from humble beginnings to becoming one of Kenya’s most respected media personalities. Born and raised in a modest village in Malava, Kakamega County, Mukangai overcame numerous obstacles to transform not only his own life but also the story of his family, serving as an inspiration to many in his community.
Mukangai’s early education was challenging. He attended a local primary school and had to repeat class 8 twice. At one point, he was on the verge of dropping out to join welding classes under his alcoholic uncle, but his mother insisted he continue his education. He subsequently joined Ingotse High School in Kakamega, arriving three weeks before the first term ended. Despite these setbacks, he persevered, completing his secondary education successfully.
After high school, Mukangai moved to Nairobi in search of better opportunities. Life in the city was tough. He worked as a construction laborer and even as a toilet cleaner, earning just Ksh.700 per week. Despite the hardships, he remained focused on his goal of achieving success. Later, he secured a job at Limuru Flowers, earning Ksh.5,000 per month, which allowed him to save and eventually join Multimedia University, which was then a college.
While at Multimedia University, Mukangai gained invaluable experience through an internship at KBC. His talent and dedication caught the attention of Jalang’o, who introduced him to Radio Africa, where he worked as a volunteer. The pivotal moment in his career came when he met Ali Hassan Kauleni, who facilitated his employment at Radio Maisha as a sports journalist. He began as an intern, later serving as a correspondent for two years before being offered a permanent position.
Mukangai’s rise in the sports journalism industry has been meteoric. His dedication, skill, and professionalism earned him fame, brand endorsements, and financial success. Today, he is a millionaire, recognized for his contributions to sports reporting and media in Kenya.
Stephen Mukangai’s story is a powerful testament to resilience, perseverance, and hard work. From the struggles of his early life in Kakamega to becoming a celebrated sports journalist with financial independence, his journey inspires young Kenyans to pursue their dreams relentlessly, no matter the obstacles.
