The death of celebrated journalist and media personality Kimani Mbugua continues to weigh heavily on the hearts of many Kenyans — but none more than his father, Mr. Dedan Mbugua, who is still struggling to come to terms with the heartbreaking loss of his son.
In a deeply emotional account, Dedan revealed the painful experience of watching CCTV footage that captured Kimani’s final moments before his tragic death.
He described the experience as one of the most agonizing moments of his life — a moment that reopened wounds even as it brought painful clarity.
“Watching that video broke me,” he said tearfully. “Kimani looked weak and was clearly struggling just before he collapsed. Every frame showed how much pain he was in, and it crushed me to realize I wasn’t there to help him.”
According to Dedan, the footage showed that Kimani had been assisted by a few individuals nearby, but despite their efforts, tragedy struck too quickly for them to save him.
He said that while the footage brought a measure of closure, it also confirmed the depth of his son’s suffering, leaving the family torn between relief and renewed grief.
“The CCTV gave us answers, but they were bitter ones. It confirmed he suffered before his passing, but at least we now know what really happened,” he added.

He remembered Kimani as a brilliant, passionate, and loving soul, whose voice and creativity inspired many during his time as a journalist.
“My son was full of life and passion. He loved people, and he touched many lives through his work. Losing him has left a hole that can never be filled,” he said.
As the family prepares to lay Kimani to rest, Dedan says he is holding on to faith and fond memories of happier times, choosing to remember his son not for how he died, but for how brightly he lived.
