Former Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has once again launched sharp accusations against former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, alleging that Gachagua was involved in coffee theft during the Moi era. According to Kuria, Gachagua, while serving as a District Officer (DO), was the alleged ringleader of a gang that stole coffee from Mboi Kamati, Komothai, and Gatatha coffee factories.
Speaking in a politically charged context, Kuria claimed that the alleged activities severely affected farmers and cooperative societies in the affected regions, contributing to long-standing grievances within the coffee sector. He argued that such actions, if true, symbolized the exploitation of farmers during a period when state officials wielded immense power with limited accountability.
The allegations have reignited debate over Kenya’s past governance and the conduct of public officials during the Moi administration. Supporters of Kuria argue that revisiting historical injustices is necessary for accountability and transparency, especially for sectors like coffee farming that sustained heavy losses over the years.
However, allies of Gachagua have dismissed the claims as politically motivated and unsubstantiated, accusing Kuria of engaging in character assassination. They insist that the former deputy president has never been convicted of any wrongdoing related to the coffee sector and argue that such allegations should be supported by evidence and addressed through legal institutions rather than public rallies.
As of now, Rigathi Gachagua has not formally responded to the latest accusations. Political analysts note that the renewed exchange reflects deepening rivalries within Kenya’s political class, particularly as leaders reposition themselves ahead of future elections.
The claims also underscore the continued sensitivity surrounding historical economic injustices and the use of past records as political weapons. Observers are calling for restraint, fact-based discourse, and respect for due process as the country navigates an increasingly polarized political environment.
