Mount Kenya University (MKU) has earned a prestigious ranking, securing 3rd place among Kenyan universities and 32nd out of 129 institutions in Sub-Saharan Africa, as per the Times Higher Education (THE) ranking. This recognition highlights MKU’s commitment to excellence in higher education and its growing influence regionally.
THE rankings assess universities based on their impact on addressing key challenges, a criterion where MKU has excelled. Notably, the university’s investments in state-of-the-art facilities like the Institute of Tropical Medicine and the Center for Malaria Elimination are pivotal. MKU’s acquisition of the Illumina NextSeq 1000 machine, Kenya’s first next-generation sequencer owned by an educational institution, positions the university at the forefront of genomic research, focusing on cancer, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and tropical diseases.
With a focus on cutting-edge research, MKU continues to collaborate with international organizations such as JICA, UNESCO, and UN Volunteers, further solidifying its role as a regional research hub. The university also fosters employability through a seamless integration of teaching and research, earning recognition for its researchers, such as Dr. Joyce Gikandi by the National Research Fund.
As MKU prepares for its 26th graduation ceremony on December 6, 2024, the university’s students are making waves in various innovation challenges, including the Huawei IT Challenge and the AI Hackathon, continuing to demonstrate the practical impact of their education.
