In October of 2023, Kenya’s music scene witnessed the emergence of a talented young artist named Sammy G, whose captivating vocals quickly gained widespread acclaim among music enthusiasts nationwide.
A dedicated admirer of gospel singer Guardian Angel, Sammy G’s journey to stardom commenced when he showcased his vocal prowess by impeccably rendering Guardian Angel’s songs on TikTok.
Sammy G’s breakthrough came with the remix of Derick Deus’s ‘Nimependa,’ a track that amassed over 7 million views within just three months. The original song, performed by Deus Derick in collaboration with Guardian Angel in 2021, had already made waves. However, Sammy G’s remix took the internet by storm, swiftly claiming the top spot on YouTube.
Amidst the success of the remix, speculation arose about Guardian Angel possibly signing both Derick Deus and Sammy G to his record label. While some praised Guardian Angel for supporting emerging talent like Sammy G, others questioned the dynamics of their relationship, suggesting possible exploitation.
Both artists clarified that their collaboration was motivated by a shared commitment to spreading the message of God.
Concerns about the relationship surfaced when collaborative projects between Guardian Angel and Sammy G seemed to decrease about two months later. Sammy G addressed these concerns in an interview with Presenter Kai on January 9, shedding light on his current status with his mentor, Guardian Angel.
Presenter Kai brought up Guardian Angel’s recent statement in an interview, where he clarified that he had not signed any artist. Sammy G responded, stating that he and Guardian Angel are on good terms and continue to collaborate on various projects independently. Despite speculations, Sammy G expressed gratitude for the support he has received from Guardian Angel.
“Watu wote waliskia Guardian akisema hakusign mtu yeyote. Tumekuwa tukiwork kwa projects zetu kivyetu na timu. Alishasema hakusign mtu, so hakusign mtu. Lakini namshukuru kwa support aliyonipa mimi” (Translation: “Everyone heard Guardian saying he hasn’t signed anyone. We’ve been working on our projects separately with our teams. He said he hasn’t signed anyone, so he hasn’t. But I thank him for the support he has given me.”)
Addressing the recent reduction in joint appearances, Sammy G attributed it to the busy schedules of both artists. He explained that after completing his KCSE exams, he was occupied with personal projects, and Guardian Angel has been engrossed in his own ventures.
Looking ahead, Sammy G disclosed upcoming projects, including a collaboration with Derick Deus, whom he considers a brother. He assured fans of collaborations with Guardian Angel in the pipeline, promising their release in God’s due time.
