Kipchumba Murkomen, born on 12 March 1979, is a prominent Kenyan lawyer and politician. He currently serves as the Cabinet Secretary for Interior Security. Before his cabinet appointment, Murkomen represented Elgeyo-Marakwet County as a senator from 2013 to 2022.
Murkomen’s educational journey began at Chawis Primary School in Embobut Forest, Marakwet East, where he sat for his KCPE in 1993. Dissatisfied with his results, he retook the exam in 1994. He then joined St Joseph’s High School, Kitale, before transferring to St Patrick’s High School, Iten, where he completed his KCSE.
His political career started early. In high school, he was elected dining hall captain, and at the University of Nairobi, he became the first second-year student to serve as chairman of the Kenya Law Society, playing a key role in student union reforms. Murkomen’s dedication to politics continued through his tenure as senator, and following the 2022 elections, he was appointed Cabinet Secretary in the Ministry of Roads and Transport, later serving in Interior Security under President William Ruto.
Murkomen is married to Gladys Wanjiru Kipchumba, a fellow lawyer and the love of his life. The couple met in college and fell in love at first sight, both pursuing law degrees at the University of Nairobi, graduating together. They are proud parents to three sons and a daughter.
Little is publicly known about Gladys Wanjiru’s early education, but she is believed to have excelled enough to gain admission to one of Kenya’s top institutions. She graduated with a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Nairobi in 2001. Like her husband, she pursued a career in law, working with international law firms in Washington DC before returning to Kenya to lecture at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, University of Nairobi, and Moi University.
Together, Kipchumba Murkomen and Gladys Wanjiru remain one of Kenya’s most accomplished and respected couples, balancing public service, law, and family life with elegance.
