Meet George Okoth: Kenyan Who Was Pastor Hired in US Army 30 Minutes After His Application

George Okoth, a Kenyan priest stationed in the United States, has an extraordinary story about being hired just 30 minutes after submitting his online application.

Born in Kenya, Okoth began his theological career as a seminary teacher in his home country. His experience teaching at the seminary prepared him for his future role as a priest in the United States.

“Through that, I got a chance to take what is called a sabbatical and go to the States to help in a diocese,” he explained.

Okoth shared that during his time serving in the United States, the Bishop and other members of the diocese were impressed by his dedication.

“The Bishop and the diocese were impressed with my services, and my Bishop was requested to let me serve in the diocese. That was the beginning of the journey,” he recounted.

While working as a priest, Okoth interacted with soldiers who visited the diocese and informed him about the need for priests in the army. Inspired by these conversations, he decided to apply for the role of an army pastor online.

“I went online, filled in my name, and in 30 minutes, someone called me from the army asking if I was a priest,” he recalled.

Following that call, the man frequently contacted Okoth to discuss how he could start his career in the army. The very next day, Okoth was informed that he had been hired and could begin ministering immediately.

“Many people tried to discourage me, but I was focused. I sent in my resignation to the parish and they accepted it,” he said.

Having served in the United States Army for 15 years, Okoth feels as if he has just begun his work. He expressed his deep satisfaction with his profession and the opportunities it provides for him to travel to Africa regularly, which helps him feel at home.

“What has really kept me going is that my time in the army has brought me to Africa. I have been to Liberia, and whenever I see African people, I remember my family, and that gives me the strength to keep going,” he shared.
