Evans Katuti from Mombasa County has pleaded guilty to manslaughter after killing his wife, Anna Kambua Mwakavi. The incident occurred on February 26, 2023, in the Migadini area of Chaani location in Changamwe Constituency. Katuti returned to his one-roomed house after watching the Carabao Cup finals between Manchester United and Newcastle United at an adjacent bar. Upon his return, he found his wife half-naked with another man in their matrimonial bed.
After asking his wife about the stranger in their bed, she admitted to him that the man was her lover. A scuffle ensued between the couple, leading Katuti to grab a knife and stab his wife. The woman’s lover fled the house after the stabbing, and Katuti locked the door of the house from the outside with a padlock before leaving.
Katuti informed his relatives of what had happened and was advised to surrender to the nearest police station. He surrendered to Mtito Andei Police Station, and the officer in charge contacted his counterparts in Changamwe who corroborated the suspect’s report. He was transported back to Mombasa to face manslaughter charges.
Appearing before Mombasa Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku on April 4, 2023, the accused claimed he acted in self-defense after his wife grabbed his testicles and squeezed them. Police had initially recommended the more serious charge of murder, but the Director of Public Prosecutions revised the charge to manslaughter after analyzing the facts.
