A man based in Nairobi has confessed to stealing $1,600 (Sh213,440) from his grandmother. Emmanuel Njenga, who resides in Embakasi, was brought before Makadara Senior Principal Magistrate Agnes Mwangi where he was arraigned together with his girlfriend, Faith Wanjiru, and their alleged accomplice, Anthony Ndegwa.
According to the charge sheet, the trio was accused of stealing the $1,600 on different occasions between March 24 and 26, from Cecilia Wangare, which contravened section 268 of the Penal Code as read with section 275 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
The court was informed that Njenga exchanged $400 (Sh53,360) of the stolen money for Kenyan currency and proceeded to purchase a television worth Sh7,000, a subwoofer worth Sh4,500, a cupboard worth Sh3,500, and a carpet worth Sh2,000. He also bought new clothes and surprised his grandmother by giving her Sh1,000 of her stolen money.
Njenga later hosted a party for his girlfriend and her friends at his residence, where he misplaced the remaining $1,200 (Sh160,080). He confessed to the police that his girlfriend had stolen the cash during the party and passed it to her friend, but it got lost in the process of changing hands.
In court, Njenga pleaded guilty to sneaking into his grandmother’s room and stealing the money. On the other hand, Ms. Wanjiru and their co-accused, Anthony Ndegwa, denied the charges, and their trial is set to commence on October 2.
The case will be brought up again on April 25, 2023, when Njenga will be sentenced.
