Lupita Nyong’o acknowledges the reasons behind the speculation surrounding her supposed romantic relationship with Janelle Monáe. The two have shared a close friendship ever since their first encounter at the Met Gala in 2014. At that time, Nyong’o was still relatively new to the entertainment industry and had recently received an Oscar for her outstanding performance in “12 Years a Slave.”
Reflecting on her early experiences, Nyong’o expressed her astonishment at the new world she had entered. In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, she recollected the moment when Monáe approached her and embraced her sincerely. Nyong’o recalled their interaction, stating, “I think we may have swayed to the music. She was just like, ‘I’m so proud of you, and just thank you for being you.'”
Monáe, in 2018, openly discussed her identification as pansexual and later revealed her non-binary gender identity, using the pronouns she/her and they/them. Nyong’o commented on the magnetic appeal that Monáe possesses, leading to speculations about their past romantic involvement. She described Monáe as enigmatic and admitted that she wasn’t surprised by the assumptions. Furthermore, Nyong’o clarified that she doesn’t mind being associated with Monáe in any capacity.
Despite their deep friendship, Nyong’o emphasized that there are aspects of Monáe’s life she remains unfamiliar with. She highlighted the fact that being a close friend does not grant exclusive knowledge about someone. Nyong’o found this aspect of Monáe’s persona intriguing and believed it contributes to her artistry.
In the context of their relationship, it is essential to note that Nyong’o is currently dating television host and designer Selema Masekela. Nyong’o firmly states that their bond with Monáe is solely that of close friends. She affirmed that although she is associated with Monáe, it doesn’t alter her commitment to her current relationship.
Monáe’s forthcoming album, titled “The Age of Pleasure,” is set to be released on June 9, adding excitement to her artistic journey.
