Just when Kenyans thought Moses Kuria had bowed out of the political spotlight, a new twist has reignited speculation. Political analyst Makau F. Mully now believes Kuria’s recent resignation may be part of a much bigger game plan—one aimed directly at shifting the power balance in the Mount Kenya region.
According to Mully, Kuria might not be stepping away from politics at all. Instead, he could be quietly repositioning himself to challenge the rising dominance of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who has increasingly tightened his grip on the vote-rich region.
Resigning from government, Mully argues, may give Kuria the freedom to speak his mind, criticize the current administration without restriction, and rebrand himself as the “people’s candidate.”
With many voters in Mount Kenya feeling left out or ignored, Kuria could use this opportunity to reconnect and present himself as a fresh alternative.
This strategy, if true, could have major consequences. The Mount Kenya vote is seen as a key battleground for anyone eyeing the presidency in 2027. If Kuria manages to cut into Gachagua’s support base, it could completely change the region’s political landscape.
Mully warns that power brokers are fully aware of how critical the region is and will do everything possible to control its narrative. That’s why Kuria’s every move is now being watched closely—not just by analysts, but by the major political players looking to secure Mt. Kenya’s loyalty.
So far, Kuria hasn’t confirmed any such mission. He maintains that his resignation was simply to focus on personal interests. Still, Mully’s comments have fueled intense speculation online, with Kenyans debating whether Kuria is truly done—or just getting started.
