Kirinyaga Lady Pleads for KSh 10,000 to Remove Swallowed Needle in Stomach

A 31-year-old mother from Mugamba-Ciura village in Mwea-East sub-county, Kirinyaga, is urgently seeking financial help to remove a sewing needle that has become lodged in her throat.

Eveline Karekia, a mother of four, accidentally swallowed the needle while sewing clothes for her baby. The needle has been stuck in her throat for four weeks, causing her considerable pain and difficulty eating.

Her husband, Kelvin Maina, has been relentlessly searching for assistance, but their efforts have been hampered by their inability to afford the necessary medical procedure.

Despite visiting several hospitals, including Embu Level 5 Hospital and Kerugoya Level 4 Hospital, the family was ultimately referred to a private facility, where they were told they would need to pay KSh 10,000 to locate and remove the needle.

“We are struggling to feed our family, and my wife continues to suffer. The hospitals are asking for KSh 10,000, but we cannot afford it,” Kelvin explained to Citizen Digital. The family is now appealing to the public for support, fearing they may lose Eveline due to their financial constraints.

The situation has also sparked concern within the community about the quality of healthcare available in the region.

“It’s alarming that a Level 4 hospital couldn’t address this emergency,” remarked David Karatai, a concerned neighbor.
