Kikuyu ‘Firirinda’ Hitmaker Dick Munyonyi is Dead

Prominent Kikuyu artist Dick Munyonyi has passed away. The renowned musician, celebrated for his iconic song ‘Firirinda,’ breathed his last while undergoing treatment at Gatundu Level 5 Hospital.

Throughout the years, Munyonyi faced persistent health challenges, having contracted tuberculosis shortly after the release of ‘Firirinda’ in 1986. Additionally, he showcased his musical prowess at the wedding of former President Uhuru Kenyatta in 1989.

In 2021, Dick Munyonyi gained renewed public attention when his classic track ‘Firirinda’ resurfaced on social media. The song, brought to the forefront by radio presenter Jeff Kuria, went viral, captivating the online community.

‘Firirinda,’ a traditional melody depicting the warmth and joy of welcoming guests, resurged in popularity, dominating Kenyan social media platforms, especially Twitter, nearly 35 years after its initial release.

The infectious tune became a nationwide sensation, with politicians even dancing to its rhythm. Notably, on February 23, Murang’a MCA’s celebrated the passage of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) bill by dancing to ‘Firirinda.’ The song also became a staple at weddings and dowry payment ceremonies.

Among Munyonyi’s notable hits are ‘Msongamano,’ ‘Mombasa,’ ‘Ngurunga,’ ‘Loan,’ ‘Kimumbo,’ and more.
