Hundreds of students who sat for the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) under challenging circumstances have posted remarkable results, opening doors to their dream courses. Among them is Femi Atieno Otung, a determined student from Mukuru kwa Njenga slums in Nairobi.
Atieno lost her father at a young age, leaving her in the care of her mother, Lilian Akeyo, who raised her through financial hardships from primary to secondary school. Despite these challenges, Atieno excelled academically, scoring an A- in her KCSE — a result that has made her mother and the entire Mukuru community proud.
Atieno sat her exams at St. Thérèse Mbooni Girls Secondary School in Makueni County and now aims to pursue medicine as a way of giving back to society.
Her results per subject were:
- English: A-
- Kiswahili: A-
- Mathematics: A
- Biology: A
- Chemistry: B+
- Physics: B
- CRE: B+
- Business Studies: A
Reflecting on her journey, Atieno said, “I lost my father at a young age and was raised by my mother, an omena vendor here in Mukuru. Life was not easy, but through resilience, discipline, faith, and community support, I remained focused on my education.”
She added, “I give special thanks to my hardworking mother, my teachers, my community, and above all, God Almighty. I humbly appeal for support to pursue my dream of studying medicine in any recognized local or international university. With the right opportunity, I am determined to serve humanity, especially communities like Mukuru.”
Atieno’s story is a testament to the power of determination, resilience, and community support, proving that adversity can be overcome with focus and perseverance.
