In the past three days, the official Facebook page of Kabarak University has been taken over by a hacker who is now demanding $500 (Ksh 68,250) in exchange for surrendering control of the page to the university. The hacker claims to be an IT student from Jakarta, Indonesia and has posted messages on the page, indicating that the university can easily afford the sum he is asking for.
The hacker has also used the page to spread malicious and misleading content, causing concern among the university’s 46,000 followers. Despite posting a message claiming to have only hacked the page for fun and asking users not to take the content seriously, the hacker has refused to return control of the page.

The Vice Chancellor of Kabarak University, Prof. Henry Kiplangat, has released a statement assuring all stakeholders and the public that the necessary measures are being taken to regain control of the page and prevent any further unauthorized access. The university will also be increasing its cybersecurity measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
