Gov Waiguru re-elected as Council of Governors chairperson

Anne Waiguru, the incumbent Governor of Kirinyaga, has successfully retained her position as the Chairperson of the Council of Governors (CoG). Her re-election took place on Monday during the Executive and Technical Committee elections held in Nairobi, where she had expressed her intention to defend her seat. Governor Waiguru is currently in her second term as a Governor, and her victory in the CoG elections solidifies her leadership within this important council.

It’s worth noting that Anne Waiguru has a history of involvement in the Council of Governors. She previously served as the first female Vice Chairperson of the Council, holding the position from December 2017 to January 2019. This prior experience likely contributed to her successful bid for the chairmanship.

Governor Waiguru assumed the position of CoG Chairperson last year, taking over from former Embu Governor Martin Wambora. In Kenya’s history, several notable individuals have held the position of CoG Chairperson, each making their mark during their respective tenures. These include Isaac Ruto from Bomet (2013-2015), Peter Munya from Meru (2015-2017), Josphat Nanok from Turkana (2017-2019), Wycliffe Oparanya from Kakamega (2019-2021), and Martin Wambora from Embu (2021-2022).

It’s worth mentioning that Salim Mvurya, the former Governor of Kwale, was elected as CoG Chairperson in December 2017. However, he did not complete his one-year term in office at that time, as Josphat Nanok was the Chief of the Council of Governors during that period.

Anne Waiguru’s re-election as the CoG Chairperson signifies the confidence that her fellow Governors have in her leadership abilities and her commitment to representing their collective interests.
