Fresh new twist as PS Hinga says majority of Mukuru residents didn’t move into affordable houses last night after President Ruto gave them keys

A fresh twist has emerged in the Mukuru affordable housing project after Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga revealed that the majority of beneficiaries did not move into their new homes despite being issued with keys by President William Ruto.

Speaking after the handover, PS Hinga explained that the delay was caused by unfinished gas installation works within the housing units. According to him, the buildings are not yet fully ready for occupation, forcing residents to wait longer before moving in.

“Majority of the people will not be moving into the Mukuru affordable houses because there is some work that needs to be done on the gas. They will have to wait for the next 90 days to move in, after we have finished the gas works,” Hinga said.

The revelation has raised questions about the timing of the high-profile key handover ceremony, which was presented as a major milestone in the government’s affordable housing agenda. Residents who had hoped to move in immediately were left disappointed after learning that the houses were not fully habitable.

The development has also sparked debate among Kenyans, with some criticizing the government for rolling out the project before it was fully complete, while others defended the move, arguing that infrastructure projects often face final-stage delays.

As the 90-day wait begins, attention now turns to whether the remaining works will be completed within the promised timeframe, allowing Mukuru residents to finally occupy the homes that were officially handed over.
