In recent years, Mutara has faced a series of challenges allegedly linked to alcoholism, depression, and purported involvement with a traditional cult in his hometown of Murang’a County. These difficulties were highlighted by philanthropist and singer Karangu Muraya on September 10, 2023, when he visited Mutara and shared concerning photos of the singer’s deteriorating condition. The following day, Karangu took Mutara to the hospital, as captured in a video showing Mutara being assisted into a vehicle due to his inability to walk unaided.
Mutara’s struggles with alcoholism came to public attention in 2021 when he underwent detoxification at Avenue Hospital followed by a stint in rehabilitation, though reports suggest he relapsed soon after leaving the facility in June of that year. Throughout this period, Mutara consistently denied allegations of alcoholism and depression.
In 2020, Mutara was also involved in a serious road accident, which he claimed was orchestrated by fellow gospel musicians who allegedly sought to undermine his career. In an interview, Mutara expressed his belief that jealousy among his peers led to attempts to extinguish his rising star.
Alongside accusations of alcoholism, Mutara has been accused of affiliating with traditional Kikuyu cults such as ‘Gwata Ndai,’ although he has vehemently refuted these claims.
