David Kariuki alias Gakuyo arrested at JKIA

Ekeza Sacco founder David Kariuki Ngare, popularly known as Gakuyo, has been apprehended at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi. In a video captured by The Standard, Gakuyo expressed confusion about the reasons behind his arrest, emphasizing his lack of knowledge regarding the motive.

In the footage, Gakuyo stated, “They say I cannot leave the country, and I just think there is some revenge somewhere. I’m happy there might be an opportunity to see the judge and to be told what case I have. I’m at the DCI at the airport.”

Authorities at JKIA, confirming Gakuyo’s presence at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) offices, refrained from disclosing the specific reasons for restricting his departure from the country.

The arrest is linked to Gakuyo’s alleged irregular transfer of Sh1.5 billion from a distressed Savings and Credit Cooperative Society (Sacco) to his personal account during the period spanning 2015 to 2017. Notably, these funds were directed to an account accessible exclusively by Gakuyo and his spouse.
