The parliamentary committee hearing on Thursday prominently featured the past relationship between Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi and Aldai MP Maryanne Kitany.
Members of the Select Committee on the Proposed Dismissal of Linturi found themselves divided on whether they should delve into the details of the former relationship.
Catherine Omanyo, the Busia Woman Representative, urged the committee to summon Kitany to provide her perspective on the matter. She emphasized the importance of hearing both sides of the story, expressing concern that discussing the issue without Kitany’s presence would be unfair.
Committee chair Naomi Waqo deferred the decision on inviting Kitany, stating that it would be addressed at a later stage.
While acknowledging the discomfort of discussing personal matters, Waqo noted that they were compelled to address the issue due to its introduction by the motion’s initiator, Bumula MP Jack Wamboka. She emphasized Linturi’s right to respond to the allegations.
Tharaka MP Gitonga Murugara lamented the committee’s obligation to handle issues brought forth by the motion initiator, particularly regarding court cases related to the matter.
Matuga MP Kassim Tandaza echoed the sentiment that since Wamboka initiated the motion and presented his case, Linturi should have the opportunity to address the allegations.
During his presentation, Wamboka urged Linturi to refrain from involving Kitany in the impeachment proceedings, characterizing Linturi’s responses as akin to those of a scorned lover and urging him to move on.
Wamboka emphasized the inappropriateness of continually dragging Kitany into unrelated matters, considering her personal life and family.
