Boniface Kariuki: Drama as late Hawker’s Mother Dismisses Claims He Worshipped at Kiengei’s JCM Church

Months after the tragic death of Boniface Kariuki—a mask vendor who was shot during protests in Nairobi’s CBD, sparking nationwide outrage—fresh drama has emerged over claims about his religious affiliation.

Kariuki’s mother has publicly denied claims that her son was a member of Jesus Compassion Ministries (JCM), led by preacher Muthee Kiengei. She said her son never attended the church, never held a membership card there, and that she herself has never worshipped at JCM. She explained that a cousin had made arrangements after his death implying Kariuki belonged to that congregation, but said those claims were false.

The controversy resurfaced amid renewed online debate after William Ruto recently visited the church as part of its anniversary celebrations — a fact that prompted discussions about the preacher’s changing relationship with national figures. Some Kenyans contrasted the church’s earlier critical remarks about the government during Kariuki’s burial with its later hosting of the President.

Kariuki’s mother also expressed disappointment that promises of support made to the family after the funeral had not been fulfilled, and she said she did not agree with Kiengei’s recent engagement with the President.

The debate highlights ongoing discussions in Kenya about faith leadership, justice after high-profile deaths, and the expectations communities have of religious institutions.
