Nancy Odindo, a local journalist with over four years of experience covering politics, news, and feature stories in Kenya, reported on a devastating tragedy that struck Bushibo village in Kakamega. A family is mourning the heartbreaking loss of two-year-old twins who perished in a house fire that left the community in shock.
According to a relative who had been caring for the toddlers at the time, the fire broke out while he was away fetching water. He recounted the harrowing experience, explaining that he had left the children playing outside the house. On his way back, he noticed smoke billowing from the house. Rushing to the scene, he found the entire structure engulfed in flames. Despite his desperate attempts to rescue the children, the intensity of the fire forced him to retreat.
The relative explained, “I was left with the children while my father went to church. I left them playing outside as I went to fetch water. On my way back, I saw smoke coming from the house. When I returned, the entire house was engulfed in flames. I searched for the children but couldn’t find them. I tried to enter the house to save them, but the fire was too intense, and I had to retreat.”
Another resident revealed that the children’s mother had recently resumed her college studies and was away at the time of the incident. He shared the disbelief and sorrow felt by the family and community. “The mother had just resumed her studies, leaving the children under care for two or three days. We still don’t understand how the fire started. It’s heartbreaking. The entire house and everything in it was destroyed, and the fire is still raging,” he said.
The tragedy has left the village reeling, with residents grappling with the shock of the loss. One neighbor expressed the community’s collective grief, saying, “When we heard the news, we cried and were left speechless.” The incident has devastated the family and shaken the entire village as authorities work to determine the cause of the fire.
