Students at Kisii Secondary School were on Tuesday thrown into brief unrest after protesting against the meals served at the institution, specifically ugali accompanied by beans. The protest erupted shortly after lunch when a group of students expressed dissatisfaction with the food, terming it monotonous and unappealing.
The learners marched to the principal’s office, where they demanded an explanation as to why the school continues to rely on maize flour for daily meals. During the confrontation, the students questioned why the administration does not request parents to provide alternative food supplies such as rice or wheat flour, which they said would allow the school to prepare meals like rice or chapati.
According to witnesses, the protest caused a temporary disruption of learning activities as students gathered within the school compound chanting and calling for changes to the menu. Some students argued that other schools offer more variety in their meals and insisted that Kisii Secondary School should consider improving its diet to enhance student welfare.
School administrators reportedly moved quickly to calm the situation and engaged student leaders in discussions aimed at restoring order. Normal activities later resumed after the administration assured students that their concerns would be addressed through the appropriate channels.
No injuries or major damage were reported during the incident, and it remains unclear whether the school will review its feeding program following the protest.
