Agnes Nkanya was one of the politicians who ran in the 2022 general elections but was not successful in winning a position. She campaigned rigorously to be the MCA for Magumoni ward in Tharaka Nithi, but was unable to secure the seat.
Before the campaign period, Agnes was working for the Ministry of Agriculture, where she earned a salary of Ksh. 40,000. However, she resigned from her position several months prior to the election to comply with the Kenyan Elections Act, which requires civil servants to vacate their offices before the campaign period.
Agnes campaigned for the Devolution Party of Kenya, which is led by former Tharaka Nithi senator and Interior CS Kithure Kindiki. Despite her efforts, she lost the election and was forced to look for alternative means of earning a living.
Photos of Agnes working at a construction site and washing cars have gone viral. In a video she posted on her social media, Agnes stated that she is a strong woman who is not afraid of work.
“I ran for MCA in Magumoni ward during the 2022 general elections, but I lost. I knocked on many doors but was unsuccessful. I have now found a job at a construction site. Although I am new to this field, I am happy and committed because I believe I am a strong woman,” Agnes said.
In the video, Agnes also lamented being neglected by the Kenya Kwanza government. She expressed that she was passionate about campaigning for Kenya Kwanza leader William Ruto, but since losing the elections, she has not received any calls or appointments to serve the people. Agnes feels sidelined.
Nevertheless, Agnes is not desperate and is willing to move forward with her life. She is not seeking sympathy, but rather wants Kenyans to be aware of the challenges that many other leaders who lost in the elections are currently facing.
