Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has cautioned residents and business people from the Mount Kenya Region living and operating in Nairobi against what he described as misleading claims regarding recent market demolitions.
In a strongly worded message, Kuria said he is not a supporter of Johnson Sakaja, noting that he believes Nairobi deserves a better chief executive. However, he criticized Rigathi Gachagua for allegedly telling traders from the Mount Kenya region that they are the only ones affected by the demolitions.
According to Kuria, the claims are misleading and risk creating unnecessary divisions among communities living and doing business in the capital. He emphasized that even though people from the Mount Kenya region are widely known for their business acumen, they still depend on other communities for customers and economic partnerships.
Kuria warned that if the narrative continues to be pushed, it could cause serious long-term damage to social, economic, and political relations. He cautioned that the consequences could be devastating and difficult to repair if communities begin to view each other with suspicion.
The remarks come amid ongoing political tensions and debates over the management of markets and businesses in Nairobi, with leaders offering different perspectives on the impact of recent demolitions on traders.
