A Nairobi mother of two has shared a heartbreaking story of how her efforts to build a life with her husband ended in betrayal and financial ruin.
Grace Mwende, who fell in love with her husband at the age of 19, said she had been the provider in the relationship from the very beginning.
Speaking during an interview, she revealed that she financed nearly everything, from transport during their courtship to business ventures that all ended in failure. She recalled that after landing a job in Isiolo, she would send her boyfriend fare to visit her and even pay for his trip back.
Later, when they moved in together in Nairobi, she handled all household expenses while he stayed at home, claiming he was planning to start a business.
Mwende said she initially gave him KSh 17,000 to start a small venture, but he asked for more, insisting he wanted to start a bigger business.
She eventually raised KSh 47,000, but the business never took off. Later, she gave him another KSh 50,000 for a wines and spirits shop, which also collapsed. The situation worsened when her husband convinced her to invest KSh 300,000 in what he claimed was a profitable business deal, only to later admit it was a scam.
Despite all that, Grace still decided to build him a home in Meru, using KSh 750,000 she had saved.
She said she gave him her ATM card and that he later returned it with only KSh 9 remaining.
The man later abandoned her after engaging in extramarital affairs, leaving her with heavy debts.
Grace is now struggling to raise her children alone and has urged women not to blindly trust or finance partners who do not contribute equally to their relationships.
