Residents of Kirinyaga County were left in shock and grief on Tuesday morning after an 80-year-old grandmother was brutally attacked in her home at Kiamutugu village, Gichugu Constituency.
According to eyewitnesses, unknown assailants broke into the elderly woman’s house in the early hours of the morning. They reportedly raped her before gouging out her eyes, leaving her in a critical condition.
Neighbors revealed that the victim had been living alone after her children relocated to other towns, making her an easy target for the attackers. The gruesome incident has sparked fear across the village, with locals demanding swift justice.

“It is heartbreaking that someone could subject an old woman to such cruelty. We are living in fear because if it can happen to her, then no one is safe,” one resident lamented.
Police officers from Gichugu have since launched investigations into the incident and appealed to members of the public to share any information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.
The victim was rushed to hospital where she is receiving treatment, though her condition remains critical.
The attack has raised concerns about rising insecurity in rural parts of the county, with leaders urged to step up efforts to protect vulnerable groups, especially the elderly who often live alone.
