Born on October 22, 2004, in Umoja One, Nairobi, Mario TJ Cassella, better known by his stage name Trio Mio, has grown into one of the most influential young voices in Kenya’s music industry. His initials TJ, short for Thanks Jesus, reflect his family’s faith and values, while his multicultural background — a Kenyan mother and a father of Italian and Congolese descent — has shaped both his outlook and his artistry.
Trio Mio’s love for music was nurtured at home. His father was a Rhumba musician, his mother once sang in a church choir, and his elder brother BigTing AP also pursued music, even giving him the name Trio Mio. Growing up in such an environment, it was only natural for him to begin writing rap verses at the tender age of eleven, performing them for classmates with a confidence that hinted at the star he would become.
His breakthrough came in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when the world seemed to stand still but his career took off. His single “Cheza Kama Wewe” became an anthem, celebrated for its catchy beat and bold delivery. The remix, featuring Exray, Mejja, and Nellythegoon, turned him into a household name, and by the time schools reopened, Trio had already claimed his place in Kenya’s rap scene.
Since then, he has released a steady stream of music, including his debut EP “Son of the City”, which showcased not just his lyrical skill but also his versatility. Collaborations with big names like Khaligraph Jones, Mejja, Masauti, Ssaru, and even Wiz Khalifa have expanded his reach, proving that his sound can travel far beyond Kenya’s borders.
Despite his youth, Trio Mio has already bagged prestigious awards. In 2021, he won Breakthrough Artist of the Year at the Unkut Africa Awards. By 2023, he was named Male Music Influencer of the Year at the Kenya Influencers Awards. And in 2024, his growing global influence saw him win Composer of the Year at the Danish Music Awards.
Away from the spotlight, Trio remains closely tied to his family. His mother, Irma Sofia Sakwa, manages his career, ensuring that even as fame grows, his foundation remains strong. His story is not just one of talent, but also of support, discipline, and faith.
Trio Mio represents a new generation of Kenyan artists: young, bold, and unafraid to dream beyond borders. His journey from Umoja estate to international recognition is proof that passion, consistency, and authenticity can turn even the simplest beginnings into global success.
