Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has strongly condemned the government’s decision to withdraw his official security detail, describing the move as an assault on democratic freedoms and a tactic to intimidate leaders who support the will of the people.
Taking to social media, Babu declared, “This is not just an attack on me, but on democracy itself,” linking the action to his visible role in nationwide protests commemorating the one-year anniversary of the June 2024 demonstrations against the controversial Finance Bill.
For the second consecutive year, the vocal legislator joined thousands of Kenyans in the streets to honour victims of police brutality — both from last year’s protests and recent crackdowns. During the height of the 2024 unrest, Babu made headlines by dramatically leaping over Parliament’s fence to join demonstrators, while many of his fellow lawmakers stayed inside.
This year, he once again stood shoulder to shoulder with protestors, calling for justice and demanding accountability from the government.
“When elected representatives are punished for standing with the people, it shows a regime that fears scrutiny more than it values service,” Babu said, joining a growing chorus of opposition leaders criticizing the administration’s response to dissent.
Despite the government’s move, the MP vowed not to be silenced or intimidated, affirming his commitment to the fight for justice and democratic rights.
In a powerful message to Kenyans, Babu urged citizens to remain vigilant and united.
“To the public: stay alert, stay united, and remember — leaders should answer to you, not silence those who walk beside you. The truth will prevail. The quest for justice will continue. We are not backing down,” he declared.
