Jackie Matubia – ‘I spent Sh300,000 Then nikaachwa

Prominent Kenyan actress and award-winning personality, Jackie Matubia, has opened up for the first time about her divorce from former husband Kennedy Njogu, shedding light on the financial and emotional toll it exacted on her.

The couple officially separated in March 2019, citing irreconcilable reasons as the basis for their decision.

In an exclusive interview with Nairobi News, the mother of two candidly shared the challenges she faced throughout the divorce proceedings, offering insight into the intricacies of the process.

“I spent approximately Sh300,000 on the process, but this can vary depending on the specific circumstances of each case. Issues such as shared assets and child support complications can complicate matters further. The proceedings involved numerous hearings and were particularly traumatizing for me, as they coincided with the Covid-19 period. Court appearances shifted to online platforms, and cases were frequently postponed or canceled. The trauma of dealing with these uncertainties took a toll on me,” Matubia explained.

Revealing her reservations about marriage following the divorce, Matubia expressed her reluctance to undergo another traditional wedding ceremony.

“As someone who has experienced marriage and navigated the challenging divorce process in Kenya, I find it daunting to consider getting that marriage certificate again,” she shared.

Matubia, renowned for her role in the popular TV series ‘Tahidi High,’ emphasized the financial and emotional hurdles associated with divorce in the Kenyan context.

“Divorce in Kenya is not only financially draining but also time-consuming. It’s a significant decision, and for those contemplating marriage again, there’s a lot to consider. While some succeed in subsequent marriages, the fear and anxiety associated with divorce make it crucial for individuals to take their time before committing to marriage,” Matubia advised.

She discouraged rushing into marriage and suggested a more extended engagement period.

“Take your time, and if possible, be open about your reservations. Personally, I was transparent from the beginning, even before the engagement. I wasn’t certain about proceeding with a church wedding. If someone is engaged for an extended period without tying the knot, it’s essential for society to understand that some individuals harbor fears and concerns about marriage,” she emphasized.

Matubia concluded by expressing that, while she doesn’t rule out the possibility of another marriage in the future, it’s not a decision she would hastily make.

“I would be willing to cohabit with a partner for over 15 years before considering a formal wedding ceremony.”

The relationship between Matubia and Kennedy Njogu began in 2014 and lasted until 2019, resulting in the birth of a daughter.
