A middle-aged man took his own life on Tuesday, January 3, after being denied money for marijuana (bhang).
The 26-year-old man from Kagio town in Kirinyaga County died a few minutes after his mother told him off.
According to the police, the woman claimed her son died by suicide inside their rental house. In a statement recorded in an occurrence book at Kiamaciri Police Station, she claimed that the son was argumentative and provocating. “I never thought that he would kill himself over money that he wanted to use to buy drugs,” Wanjiru lamented.
Wanjiru detailed that she refused to give out the money nor bow to his son’s demands.
While confirming the incident, Mwea West Police Commander Wilson Koskei noted that the deceased’s mother reported the case at Kiamaciri Police Station.
“Officers were sent to the scene, and managed to recover the body of the victim. We are currently conducting investigations to establish the facts of the matter,” Koskei noted.
The deceased’s lifeless body was found hanging from the ceiling of his mother’s rented house in Kagio town.
Koskei further confirmed that the body was moved to Kirinyaga Level Five Hospital.
“We will inform you of the outcome of the investigations, but all indications show that it was death by suicide,” Koskei noted.
Suicide incidents have increased in the country, even as the government moves to establish measures to curb the scourge.
