A young woman from Machakos has left Kenyans stunned after admitting she travelled from Machakos to Ruiru on a boda boda at 2 a.m. just because her boyfriend did not pick up her calls. The dramatic night journey—covering nearly 50 kilometres in the dark—has quickly turned into one of the week’s most talked-about relationship stories online.
In her viral TikTok confession, the woman said panic struck when her boyfriend’s phone went unanswered several times. Fearing he was spending the night with someone else, she rushed outside, found a boda boda rider, and begged him to take her to Ruiru immediately. The rider agreed, but at a steep cost: KSh 6,000, almost 20 times the usual daytime fare.
She described the ride as a cold, nerve-racking blur of wind, darkness, and wild thoughts. But when she finally arrived, the truth was far less dramatic than her imagination. Her boyfriend was simply asleep—no other woman, no suspicious activity, just silence and a switched-off world.
What followed was confusion and tension. Still half-asleep, the boyfriend was more shocked by the KSh 6,000 bill than her unexpected appearance. After a brief argument with the boda rider, he ended up paying the amount, complaining that the whole situation was unnecessary and financially draining.
The incident has split opinion on social media. Some users defended the woman, saying she acted out of love and anxiety. Others criticised the move as extreme and risky, with many joking that she “wasted 6K on assumptions.” Memes, jokes, and parody videos have since gone viral across TikTok and X.
It is unclear whether the couple is still together. But Kenyans agree on one thing: while midnight rides look romantic in movies, in real life they can cost a fortune—and end up becoming national entertainment.
