Why KMTC students will wait longer to benefit from HELB

Students at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) will have to wait a little longer before they can access loans and scholarships under the new Higher Education Funding model.

Although the government had promised that all students in public institutions would benefit from the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) program, KMTC learners are yet to receive direct access to the funds. Currently, only students enrolled in universities and technical vocational education training (TVET) institutions are eligible for the new funding model.

This delay has raised concerns among KMTC students, many of whom rely on financial aid to support their medical studies. The institution trains thousands of nurses and medical professionals each year, making it a key pillar in Kenya’s healthcare system.

According to recent updates, talks are ongoing between the Ministry of Education, HELB, and KMTC to find a solution. However, no exact timeline has been provided for when KMTC students will start receiving support under the new model.

In the meantime, affected students are being advised to explore other forms of support or wait for an official announcement. The government maintains that it is committed to ensuring no deserving student is left behind.
