Why Jose Gatutura doesn’t drink alcohol

In a recent YouTube interview, Jose Gatutura, the acclaimed Mugiithi star known as ‘Machete’, shed light on his decision to abstain from alcohol, emphasizing that maintaining sobriety is essential for his commitment to his ’employers’.

Despite frequently featuring beer bottles in his songs, Gatutura clarified that he refrains from drinking. He explained, “The key is to be aware of your past and future. When I’m in a club, I view it as my workplace to entertain people, and being under the influence is not conducive to that.”

Gatutura expressed the importance of being cautious as a musician, highlighting the potential influence of fans. He cautioned, “Fans can lead you astray, and if you’re not careful, you might jeopardize your career. My fans are like my employers, and I owe them respect. I need to stay sober. Even if there are beautiful women present, I see them as fans, not potential partners.”

Offering advice, Gatutura remarked that many male singers succumb to the allure of their female fans. He warned against turning fans into romantic relationships, as it could negatively impact one’s career. He stressed the need to discern between fans and potential partners to maintain professional integrity.

Gatutura shared insights into his songwriting, emphasizing the moral messages embedded in his music. He stated, “My songs aim to educate. I address issues like young women relying on wealthy men, leading to exploitation and heartbreak. The rawness in my songs is intentional; I want the message to resonate deeply.”

Renowned for hits such as ‘Tuirio twega’ (Good Food), ‘Haha ni gute’ (This is Vanity), and ‘Mwari wa muthamaki’ (Daughter of a King), Gatutura has become a household name in many Kikuyu homes. He attributes his success to divine guidance, stating, “God directs most of my songs. His grace empowers us to keep making music, so aspiring artists should persevere and never give up.”
