Why Body of Billionaire Hasmukh Patel sat upright during his funeral

On Sunday, September 1st, 2024, the late Hasmukh Patel, a prominent billionaire and owner of Mombasa Cement, was honored with a unique funeral procession in Mombasa. Unlike traditional ceremonies, Patel’s body was positioned upright in a special casket as it was paraded through the city, symbolizing his continued presence among his loved ones.

The procession visited five temples in Mombasa, where Patel was deeply revered for his significant contributions to their construction. Mourners gathered to pay their final respects as the procession moved from temple to temple, beginning at Pandya and traveling along Moi Avenue. At each stop, prayers were offered in his memory.

Patel’s family explained that the decision to seat his body upright reflected his enduring spirit and connection to the community, signifying that he remains with them in spirit even after his passing.

Before the cremation ceremony, the procession made a poignant stop at Patel’s charity offices, highlighting his unwavering commitment to helping those in need. This stop, particularly at a temple near the Royal Court Hotel, held special significance as it was a place where many underprivileged residents received assistance from the generous tycoon. Family members noted that this extended stop was in recognition of Patel’s dedication to charity work.

Patel’s Legacy of Philanthropy

Known as the ‘people’s billionaire,’ Hasmukh Patel was celebrated for his extensive philanthropic efforts. He provided financial support for education, medical care, and essential supplies to countless individuals. The procession continued to other temples in Nyali and concluded at the New Cutchi Leva Patel Samaj Hall on Links Road, where a service was held. This location was of particular sentimental value, as it was where Patel’s son’s wedding had taken place.

The cremation ceremony, known as ‘mukhagni,’ was conducted by a Hindu priest and senior family members at the crematorium, with only close family members in attendance.

Prominent Leaders Attend Patel’s Funeral

Reports indicate that President William Ruto was expected to attend the funeral before departing for China later in the day. Other prominent leaders scheduled to pay their respects included Kalonzo Musyoka, Abdulswamad Nassir, Badi Twalib, Rashid Bedzimba, and Masoud Machele. MP Badi Twalib proposed honoring Patel’s legacy by erecting a statue or naming a road or street after him, a testament to the lasting impact he had on the community.
