Celebrated Kenyan actress Caroline Muthoni Ngethe, better known as Carol Sonnie, has recently shared insights into her battle with depression in the past.
In a candid conversation with online journalists, the mother of one acknowledged grappling with psychological distress following the end of a significant relationship, prompting her to seek professional assistance.
Sonnie disclosed that the impact of depression was profound enough to manifest changes in her physical appearance, causing concern among her devoted fans.
During that challenging period, she candidly revealed, “Someone even confronted me, ‘Sonie, do you have HIV?’ I was completely taken aback. The question haunted me to the point that I felt compelled to undergo a test. I am well aware of my negative status.”
She went on to confess, “From my perspective, I believed I was handling it well. Looking at myself in the mirror, I thought everything was fine. It took me some time to realize the toll it was taking on my mental well-being. It sapped me of my strength.”
Acknowledging her gratitude towards her psychologist, Sonnie expressed how instrumental they were in aiding her through the tumultuous period of depression. She said, “I sought help from what I believe is the best specialist globally. They guided me through self-discovery and understanding myself. I am confident that nothing can regress me back to that dark place because mentally, I am in a good space. I used to eat a lot during that time but never gained weight.”
Emphasizing the vital role of mental peace in personal development, Sonnie stressed its significance based on her own transformative journey.
The single mother also opened up about the unwavering support she received from her parents, especially in raising her daughter, Keilah Oyando.
Reflecting on a poignant moment from two years ago, Sonnie became emotional while recounting the aftermath of her breakup with comedian Mulamwah, also known as David Oyando, her former partner.
