A shocking twist unfolded at Kamiti Maximum Prison when a prisoner was arrested for stealing bed sheets on the very day he was set to walk free. Michael Wanjohi, who had been serving a 27-year sentence for robbery with violence and links to a notorious gang terrorizing Mwiki Kasarani, was caught red-handed shortly after his release.
According to prison authorities, Wanjohi was nabbed with three bales of new bed sheets after two warders tipped off police. Kamiti Maximum Prison’s commandant confirmed the incident, saying:
“The suspect had just finished his jail term yesterday and was freed this morning. We took him back to our cell for interrogation.”
Wanjohi now awaits arraignment in court, raising eyebrows about post-prison reintegration and the challenges of reforming inmates. Witnesses, including Daniel Oguta, argued that prisoner rehabilitation needs a broader approach. He noted that reintegration is like welcoming a newborn—without proper support such as payroll or guidance, former inmates may struggle to adapt and could fall back into wrongdoing.
The bizarre incident has sparked a mix of shock, amusement, and debate online, with many questioning how a man on the brink of freedom could risk returning to prison over bed sheets.
