The internet should be owned by the government, not private people” – President Museveni

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has ignited a fresh debate across East Africa after declaring that the internet should not be in the hands of private companies, but fully controlled and owned by the government. Speaking during a public address, Museveni argued that digital infrastructure is now as critical as electricity, transport, and national security, and therefore must be safeguarded by the state.

Museveni maintained that leaving internet ownership to private players exposes a country to external interference, exploitation, and uncontrolled influence. According to him, governments must take full charge to protect national interests, regulate digital operations, and ensure that citizens are not manipulated by foreign corporations.

“The internet should be owned by the government, not private people,” Museveni stated firmly, insisting that public ownership would allow the state to manage access, guarantee stability, and secure sensitive national data. He added that private companies operate with profit motives, which he believes can compromise transparency and public welfare.

His remarks come at a time when many African nations are grappling with issues of digital freedom, data protection, and rising costs of internet services. Critics argue that government ownership could open the door to censorship and restricted digital rights, while supporters say state control could lower costs and improve security.

Museveni, who has previously pushed for stricter internet regulations—including shutdowns during elections—insisted that Uganda must adapt to global realities by treating the internet as a strategic national resource.

The statement has sparked mixed reactions online, with many expressing concern that full state ownership might limit freedom of expression, while others believe government control could create a more stable and secure digital environment.
