Ted Kitana, popularly known by his stage name Teacher Kilunda from the hit TV show Tahidi High, has opened up about his decision to leave Nairobi and start over in rural Kenya.
The actor revealed that the abrupt end of the long-running Citizen TV series left him without a steady income, forcing him to rethink his life and finances. Admitting that he hadn’t made significant savings or investments during his time on the show, Kilunda said the loss of income brought him face to face with financial hardship—something several of his fellow cast members have also acknowledged.
“I can say it was an abrupt decision by the management. We just woke up one day and were told our services were no longer needed,” Kilunda shared. “So I had to act fast to survive. I decided to relocate to Kangundo. It took some adjusting, but I’ve grown to love it here. The village life is peaceful—food is fresh, and there’s no pressure. My family is still in Nairobi, but for now, I’m not planning to return unless a job opportunity arises.”
Having spent nearly 15 years as one of the lead actors on the popular weekly drama, Kilunda is now focused on rebuilding his life in the countryside. He has already opened a shop and is planning to launch a barbershop and offer other services that are currently lacking in the area.
Despite the shift in lifestyle, Kilunda is not done with acting. “I haven’t left the stage. I’m still open to offers and ready to work,” he said.
Reflecting on the broader impact of the pandemic, Kilunda noted that many of his fellow actors are still struggling. “Covid-19 was a huge blow to artists. It disrupted our main source of income. Things have changed, but I always tell my colleagues not to give up. Everyone was affected, and only those who keep their heads high stand a chance of making it through.”
