Sebastian Sawe, 30, continued his meteoric rise in marathon running by winning the men’s race in an outstanding 2:02:15. His performance not only secured victory but also earned him a €30,000 (about Ksh4.6 million) bonus for finishing under the 2:02:30 cutoff time.

Sawe established a commanding lead by the halfway point, clocking 60:16, and was effectively unchallenged for the rest of the 42-kilometre race. Despite slightly easing off near the end, his time was the world’s best marathon time in 2025.

Kenya also celebrated success in the women’s race as Rosemary Wanjiru stormed to victory with a time of 2:21:04, becoming the first Kenyan woman to win the Berlin Marathon in seven years.

Her victory secured her the €30,000 (Ksh4.6 million) winner’s prize, although she narrowly missed out on the additional bonus that required a sub-2:16:00 finish.

With Sawe’s commanding performance and Wanjiru’s historic win, the 2025 Berlin Marathon winners once again showcased Kenya’s dominance in long-distance running.
